Racine Youth Sports to honor Azarian

By Journal Times staff, Aug. 9, 2000

The late Tony Azarian devoted a large part of his life to helping kids in any way he could. Even with his passing, his name will still be associated with giving.

The Racine Youth Sports' board of directors, of which Azarian was a member, is starting a scholarship program that will benefit high school seniors who have excelled as both a student and an athlete.

This scholarship was inspired by numerous calls to RYS members in the aftermath of Azarian's death. The former All-State defensive lineman for the Horlick High School football team was killed at age 39 in a construction accident April 15.

According to a press release distributed by the RYS, "Most of us who served with him on the Board of Directors for Racine Youth Sports have been approached by numerous individuals and businesses concerning a gift or donation in Tony's honor.''

Donations received by the RYS will go toward funding the scholarship, which will be known as the "Tony Azarian Student-Athlete Award." The remaining board of directors for RYS have done their part in getting this program started by pledging $2,000.

Tax-deductable gifts may be sent to: RYS in Memory of Tony Azarian, P.O. Box 1673, Racine, 53401. For more information, please call 639-9006.
