Madison Individuals Poised To Make State Tournament in 2003 at Sectionals today.

Saturday, February 22, 2003
State Journal staff

There has been one qualifier to the WIAA state individual wrestling tournament from a Madison high school in the last three years, but that drought is poised to end today at two individual sectional meets.

For the second year in a row, the four Madison high schools are split for postseason with Memorial and West going to Reedsburg while East and La Follette head to Badger High School in Lake Geneva.

Memorial has three qualifiers led by 125-pounder Tony Ayala (27-1) and 152-pounder Jimmy Mack (26-3), while West has one in 130-pounder Ekachai Steinhorst (16-8). East has five qualifiers led by 112-pounder Sergio Mireles (29-4), while La Follette has four headed by 189-pounder Tyler Knutson (29-2).

Madison East's Larry Moen was the last city wrestler to qualify in 2001. Madison Memorial's Ricky Moll was the city's last placewinner, taking fifth at 130 in 1999. Chad Powell of Madison La Follette was the last city wrestler to win a state title, taking the title at 112 in 1993.

The top two finishers at each weight at each of the eight Division 1 sectionals across the state qualify for next week's state meet at the Kohl Center in Madison. The top three finishers at each weight from each of the four Division 2 and 3 sectionals statewide advance to state.

The Janesville Craig Cougars Win Three Weights, Two With Repeat Winners, To Win Their Third Straight Big Eight Title in 2003 . Tony Ayala places 1st, Diego Mireles places 2nd and Sergio Mireles places 3rd.

Sunday, February 9, 2003

Braden Radunzel and Justin Gutoski of Janesville Craig repeated as Big Eight Conference wrestling champions Saturday as the Cougars won their third straight conference title at Madison West High School.

Jeremy Harnack was the only other individual winner for Craig, which won the team title with 228 1/2 points. Official team results were not supplied to the competing schools, although it appeared Sun Prairie beat out Middleton in the battle for second.

Senior Jon Clark, a runner-up last season, was Sun Prairie's only champion, pinning Andrew Zeuske of Middleton in 3 minutes, 24 seconds. Kodey Feiner and Steve Butcher, conference champions last season, both finished second this year.

Mike Jackowski and Ryan Williamson each scored their second conference titles for Middleton. Madison Memorial's Tony Ayala captured his third conference title at 125 and teammate Jimmy Mack moved down from 160, where he finished second a year ago, to win his first title at 152.

Janesville Parker's Dan Jackson, a conference champion a year ago at 103, won at 112. Andy Kelley (119) was the lone Madison East champion, but the Purgolders -- in the hunt for the conference dual title before losing at Janesville Craig -- finished a disappointing sixth in the unofficial results.

Team scores:

Janesville Craig 228 1/2

Sun Prairie 168

Middleton 159 1/2

Janesville Parker 155 1/2

Beloit Memorial 132

Madison East 129

Madison La Follette 83

Madison Memorial 75 1/2

Speakers React To Madison School District's 2003-04 List Of 250 Vulnerable Items including cutting the wrestling program

Friday, March 14, 2003
Doug Erickson Education reporter

Late into the night they spoke.

Some begged. Some vented. Some were so small they needed a chair to reach the microphone.

Fifteen wore T-shirts that said, "Life without wrestling? I don't think so!"

Dozens sported red buttons dispensed by the teachers union -- "No more cuts."

About 500 people filled the gym at Madison's Sherman Middle School Thursday in a first wave of budget-related activism.

The Madison School District faces substantial cuts to what it calls its same-service budget. If it were to continue doing everything it does now, it would need another $9 million to $18.5 million next school year beyond what state law will allow it to spend. The exact figure may not be known for months -- it hinges on legislative action.

Speakers at Thursday's School Board hearing were reacting to a list of 250 vulnerable items compiled by administrators. Some of the items will end up as recommended cuts in Superintendent Art Rainwater's balanced-budget proposal this May. Layoffs are expected.

But first, the board will vote Monday on which items to take off the list -- ones that Rainwater shouldn't even consider for cuts.

Students were allowed to speak first Thursday so they could get home to bed. Donnie Sampson, a second-grader at Midvale Elementary School, kicked things off.

"My Reading Recovery teacher helped me learn to read, so did my first-grade teacher," he said, urging the board to keep the literacy intervention program. "Now I can read books at home to my family."

Memorial High School senior Tony Ayala warned that if a district as large as Madison drops wrestling, smaller districts might follow, jeopardizing the sport in the state. He delivered petitions signed by 354 people who want sports, including cheerleading, spared.

La Follette senior Stefanie Gunn turned in 375 signatures of people supporting minority service coordinators at the high schools. "As a minority, sometimes the odds are kind of set against you to succeed," said Stefanie, who is black. "They give us that extra push."

Some students lobbied for programs by naming specific staff members who've helped them. "She has provided a community for Hmong students who have always felt excluded in Madison," La Follette junior Pahoua Xiong said of Choua Her, a member of the district's community response team. Team members often bridge cultural divides through outreach and special programs.

Other students spoke in support of the elementary strings music program, the Open Classroom program at Lincoln Elementary and pompom squads.

Mary Seidl, psychologist at Huegel Elementary, gave board members copies of a suicide note -- with the name blocked out -- that a student left on her desk last week.

"It was very nice knowing you," the note reads. "My life was a disaster. I hated it."

Seidl said she immediately got help for the student.

"I ask you -- who will be there next year for this student if building-based psychological services are not available?" Seidl asked the board.

Tina Murray, a technology teacher at Shabazz City High School, used detailed graphs to show how the district could save $7.3 million annually by switching to more Apple MacIntosh computers instead of personal computers that use the Microsoft Windows program. The savings would come from cheaper software and a need for less technical support, among other things, she said.

Board members Bill Clingan and Ruth Robarts told district administrators to analyze Murray's research and report back.

After three hours, 70 people had spoken and dozens more were still waiting their turns. Of the first 70 speakers, 30 were students, 26 were district employees and 14 were parents and community members.

Many said they sympathized with board members and urged them to seek more operating money through a referendum -- under state law, only voters can authorize property tax increases above what state revenue caps allow. Board member Carol Carstensen said a referendum is under serious consideration.

John Matthews, executive director of Madison Teachers Inc., drew a standing ovation for advocating a public vote. "Given the information and the opportunity, the voters will enable you to operate the current programs with the current staff levels," he said.

Dean Loumos, executive director of Housing Initiatives Inc. in Madison, said the difficult task of trying to maintain high-quality education shouldn't fall entirely to board members. Let voters share the burden of deciding what to do, he said.

"This is a big deal," he said of the possible cuts. "This is something I want in on. This is something the city wants in on."

Jesse Ayala Jr. and Sergio Barbosa-Mireles win Middle School Scholarships Awards. Latino Students In Spotlight At Awards Dinner

Saturday, November 4, 2000
Naomi R. Patton Wisconsin State Journal

With an eye on the new millennium, Centro Hispano of Dane County honored its past and future on Friday night at the group's 11th annual banquet in Middleton.

More than 550 people attended the awards dinner, themed ``Latinos in the New Millennium.'' A dozen scholarships were given to middle school, high school, college and nontraditional students.

``Tonight is dedicated to Latino students and it's dedicated to the people that work with them,'' said Centro Hispano Executive Director Lucia Nunez. ``We are here to root ourselves in our ancient history, and the students here are forging a new path.''

Robert Ibarra, UW Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and author of ``Beyond Affirmative Action: Reframing the Context for Higher Education,'' discussed education reform in his keynote speech.

``The future of Latinos and Latino youth is involved in becoming aware,'' Ibarra said. ``Once you have the ideas in place they will become keys to the future.''

Scholarship recipients included:

* Middle school students: Jesus Ayala, Jr., Sergio Barbosa-Mireles and Javi Galindo.

* High school students: Leticia C. Hernandez Garcia, Modesta Montes and Angelica R. Rojo.

* College students: Barbara Elinor Alvarado, Angelina Paz Calderon and Angel L. Gullon-Rivera.

* Adults: Ruben Guerrero and Delmis Espinal.

Sandra Becerra, a freshman at Madison West High School, received $1,000 as the first-time Sanchez Scholar award winner, named for retired UW Professor Roberto Sanchez.

Janesville Craig Clinches 2002 Big Eight Conference Wrestling Title. Madison Memorial, Despite A Key Injury, Battles The Cougars To The End. Memorial Aims To Build Off Loss

Saturday, January 19, 2002
Rob Hernandez Wisconsin State Journal
JANESVILLE

For Madison Memorial, it was another strange chapter to a frustrating three weeks at the end of the Big Eight Conference dual wrestling season Friday night.

First came the loss to Middleton. Then there was last week's tie at Janesville Parker. And now this, a 31-23 loss to Janesville Craig that allowed the Cougars (7-0 conference) to clinch the Big Eight dual title and left the Spartans scratching their heads for the third week in a row.

"They're irritated, but -- as you can see -- they're competing," said Memorial assistant coach Brent Huggins, who filled in for Rich Legler after the head coach's wife, who is 7 months pregnant, went into early labor and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

"They're not going to quit. And we'll have to use this as a building block."

At 4-1-1 entering the dual, the Spartans' chances of catching Craig were slim. But they didn't get any better when Memorial -- holding a 15-6 lead after six matches -- was forced to default at 189 pounds after Peter Holmgren hit his head on the mat 41 seconds into a scoreless bout with Craig's Ben Kessler, who earned six team points for the victory.

"He didn't want to leave," Memorial junior 125-pounder Tony Ayala said of his senior teammate.

That's how much this dual meant to the Spartans, who withstood the injury setback that followed a 5-3 overtime victory from Arik Grundahl at 171 and got back in the match.

After the default, Craig got a 3-2 victory from Brandon Dillner at heavyweight and a pin from Al Huschka with less than 30 seconds left at 103 to take a 21-15 lead. R.J. Brachman made it a 21-20 dual with a victory via technical fall for Memorial at 112, but Braden Radunzel gave the Cougars a seven-point cushion with a second-period pin at 119.

Ayala made Craig earn the victory when he won a 6-3 showdown with Jeff Davis at 125. Mike Vazquez recorded an 11-3 win over Doug Miller in the final match at 130, but not without some anxious minutes in the first period after Miller landed on the side of his head at the end of an awkward exchange.

"They outwrestled us," Craig coach Bill O'Leary said. "They did things they needed to do in order to beat us in close matches. The good news is I had enough kids at the end to come through and win. And they did. Good teams find a way to win. We're a good team. We found a way to win."

103: Huschka, JC, pinned Bernfeldt, 5:31.

112: Brachman, MM, won by technical fall over Galassini, 17-2 (2:35).

119: Radunzel, JC, pinned Worhle, 3:24.

125: Ayala, MM, def. Davis, 6-3.

130: Vazquez, JC, def. Miller, 11-3.

*135: Evashevski, MM, pinned Olver, 3:25.

140: Gutoski, JC, def. Spaith, 7-1.

145: Grady, MM, def. Johnson, 1-0.

152: Vogt, JC, def. Gardener, 9-5.

160: Mack, MM, def. Everhart, 5-2.

171: Grundahl, MM, def. Stewart, 5-3 (OT).

189: Kessler, JC, won by injury default over Holmgren, 2:31.

Hwt: Dillner, JC, def. Smith, 3-2.

Tony Ayala runs a leg in winning 1600 Relay in 2002 City Meet

Thursday, April 4, 2002
Eric Anderson Wisconsin State Journal

The city's top track and field athletes performed just the way it figured they would at the City Indoor Meet Wednesday night at the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center.

Madison La Follette senior Nathan Brown opened his season with a record-setting time in the 55-meter hurdles. Madison Edgewood's terrific senior duo of Erica Schoeller and Marianne Junck combined to win five events.

But there was one new face in the crowd of winners. And he brought down the house by bringing down an old record.

La Follette junior Lewis Stotts cleared 6 feet, 8 1/4 inches in the high jump, besting the mark of 6-8 set by Madison East's Jerry Moran in 1981.

"I wasn't even thinking I was going to jump this high. My goal today was to jump 6-6," said Stotts, whose effort was three-quarters of an inch better than the state's top performance so far this season. "But, hey, I was feeling good."

"My goal this whole year was to jump 6-10. Maybe I'll have to up it a little bit."

It was one of three records set on a night otherwise owned by Madison Memorial, which swept the team titles.

Brown -- the defending WIAA Division 1 state champion in the 300 hurdles -- destroyed the hurdles record, turning in a time of 7.3 seconds to beat the old mark by four-tenths of a second.

The University of Wisconsin recruit later won the 400, finished second in the shot put and anchored what appeared to be a victorious 1,600 relay team to cap the night.

The win in the final running event would have given La Follette its third straight city indoor team title, but the Lancers were disqualified because officials ruled some of their teammates spilled onto the track while cheering and interfered with other runners. The ruling resulted in the Spartans pulling out a one-point victory.
